Tourism Villages are soaring in popularity with visitors to Bali right now.
They give visitors the chance to see firsthand what life is like for local Balinese people and learn about culture, history, and the natural landscape.
The most famous Tourism Village in Bali is Penglipuran Village in Bangli. This ancient village has been recognized by the United National World Tourism Organisation as one of the best tourist villages in the world. There are hundreds of small tourist villages dotted across Bali.
Few are as established as Penglipuran, but all share a mission and vision to promote the very best of Balinese culture to the world.
Bali’s taro Village, located just outside of Ubud, is becoming increasingly popular with tourists. Most Bali lovers will be familiar with Taro Village, which is the starting point for many of the ATV and rafting tours available around Ubud.
But spend a little more time in Taro Village and tourists soon discover there is a wealth of culture wonders to explore.
The Head of Taro Tourism Village Management Wayan Gede Ardika, told reporters that during the Eid holidays last week Taro Village saw a huge rise in the numbers of tourists visiting the area.
There is hope that this positive trend will continue as the big high season approaches on the island.
During a visit to Taro Traditional Tourism Village, tourists can learn about the protected white cows, also known as Lembu Putih, which is famous in the village.
There are also opportunities to explore the bamboo forest and learn about bamboo cultivation and its wide range of uses throughout the island.
The Taro Firefly Garden is also a popular activity for tourists. In the early evening, fireflies wake up and can be seen flying around the perfectly manicured gardens and rice paddies that surround Taro Village.
It is a really magical experience as the glowing insects appear to dance far into the distance.
For real culture-curious tourists, a visit to Gunung Raung Temple in Taro Village is a must. The site’s ancient temple is connected to the arrival of a Maharsi Rsi Markandeya from Mount Raung, East Java, who came to Bali around the 8th-9th century.
Taro Village is located north of Ubud, and north of the Tegalalang Rice Terraces, around a 50-minute drive from central Ubud.
Most tourists visit Taro Village as part of a day trip, stopping off at the Tegalalang Rice Terraces and Ceking Rice Terraces and sometimes even going a little further north to visit Tangkup Waterfall, a hidden gem of a waterfall.
It is possible to visit Tirta Empul Temple and Taro Village in one day, though it is better to visit Tirta Empul as early as possible in the morning as the ultra-popular water blessing temple can get pretty busy.
It takes around 35 minutes to drive from Tirta Empul Temple to the Taro Village Experience.
There are plenty of activities to take part in at the Taro Village Experience. Gets can learn to make Bali concept oil, the traditional way, it’s also possible to visit the traditional coconut house, a traditional Balinese home made entirely from coconut wood.
The house is surrounded by an indigenous food forest where guests can learn all about (and try) tropical fruits like durian, snake fruit, mangosteen, jackfruit, and more.
For those who really want to take a deep dive into Balinese culture in Taro Village, then signing up for a cooking class is an absolute must.
Guests are invited to gather ingredients straight from the gardens to create a traditional lunch with the local community. You’ll be sent away with the receipt to see if you can recreate the menu when you return home, too!
