When we think of wine pairings, we think of medium-rare steaks and cuts of fish to go with glasses of red and white, but have you tried them with Indonesian food? That’s right, we’re making the case for wine pairings with popular local dishes. If that wasn’t enough, you can buy one and get a second bottle for IDR200,000 at the 8.8 Wine Sale all August long. Read on for our recommendations!
Beef Rendang
Non-crispy, of course. Dishes with strong flavors like this classic go well with red wines such as the Penfolds Koonunga Hill Cabernet Sauvignon (First bottle IDR500,000, second bottle IDR200,000). Expect hints of blackberry and plum on the nose, with subtle tannins that help to cut through the heaviness of this dish.
Sate Lilit Ikan
You already know that white wine goes with fish, so why not try it with Sate Lilit Ikan? Made of grilled marinated minced fish, this Balinese dish goes perfectly with a glass of Matua Rosé (First bottle IDR500,000, second bottle IDR200,000) or Matua Sauvignon Blanc First bottle IDR485,000, second bottle IDR200,000). The bright fruity notes of these wines make for a refreshing sip, while a crisp acidity enhances the fragrant lemongrass flavors in the dish.
Babi Guling
Also known as suckling pig, this dish is a staple in Indonesian cuisine. With tender roast meat and crispy skin, it makes sense to pick a white wine. One with a light to medium body such as the Penfolds Koonunga Hill Chardonnay (First bottle IDR500,000, second bottle IDR200,000) would be a perfect choice. Its subtle oakiness as well as citrus and stone fruit flavors work beautifully with pork.
These wines and more are on sale at Vines, both in-store and online for the month of August.
