This Bali Beach Is One Of The Best Places In The World For First-Time Surfers

Bali is one of the best places in the world to learn to surf. Famed for its white sandy beaches and a huge range of surf breaks, it’s true that Bali has a wave for every kind of surfer.

While the pros like to head down to Uluwatu or even brave the right-hand break in Keramas, beginners love learning to surf in Legian.

Legian Beach is a laid-back coastal retreat loved by tourists from all around the world but particularly popular with tourists from Australia.

Legian, nestled between old favorite Kuta and ever-trending Seminyak, is the perfect destination for a chilled-out beach retreat.

There is plenty to keep tourists busy in Legian. If you’re not kicking back by your hotel’s pool, there’s more than enough sunbeds for everyone down on the sandy shores of Legian Beach

Nightlife in Legian is as vibrant as ever, and the food scene has people coming back for more. The beachfront is lined with traditional beach bars, cold drinks stalls, and surf shacks.

While many beginners who head to Bali to learn to surf B-line for Kuta Beach, neighboring Legian Beach has just as much to offer.

In fact, this vacation season, tourists love learning to surf at Legian Beach. Local surf school owners and instructors have been speaking to reporters about the rising interest in the activity.

One teacher, Wayan Gede Resa Arya, has been taking on more first-time surfers as students this year compared to previous high seasons.

The ‘beach boys’ of Bali are known and loved for their cheeky charm and fun-loving nature, but it has to be said these guys are really good teachers.

They know their stretch of the surf like the back of their hand; they are confident in the water and know exactly how to coach even the most nervous of beginners into catching their first waves even in their first session.

Arya said that it’s not just young backpackers who want to learn to surf in Legian these days. He said that he’s been coaching kids from the age of five upwards and that people in their 60s have been booking sessions too.

Like many other surf instructors in Legian, Kuta, Seminyak, and Canggu, Arya is conscious of keeping his pricing competitive but also running a fair and successful business, Ramp Surf Explore.

He told reporters that demand is so high that tourists have to book up to four days in advance in order to secure a private 90-minute surfing session with him, which costs IDR 250,000.

Arya and most other surf businesses in the Legian area also hire out surfboards by the hour, as well as rash vests and other gear for those who have not got equipment with them.

Arya and surf instructors in Legian are keen to see more and more tourists picking up the sport. He shared his top tips for anyone thinking of learning to surf on their next trip to Bali.

Arya said, “It is not recommended to learn to surf every day because surfing makes the body tired and tired, so one day’s break is needed.”

“But surfing is good for keeping the body healthy because everything moves, starting from the brain, legs, and hands.”

And it’s just as well; there are heaps of other activities to keep tourists busy on those much-needed rest days, whether that be making a day trip to Ubud to experience all that the arts and culture capital has to offer or nipping over to Nusa Penida to explore the iconic clifftops and coves of the outlying island.
