The Comprehensive Guide to Yoga in Ubud 2020

Welcome to Ubud, the yoga and wellness haven in Bali, Indonesia. Famous for its rich landscapes, picturesque sceneries and expansive rice fields, Ubud is also known for its world famous yoga studios. Yogis from all over the world come to Ubud for yoga, teacher training and yoga retreats. With a variety of styles available – there is something for everyone, no matter what your level is. During our long and very(!) happy stay in Ubud we got to try and visit some of the local yoga studios, please find below some of our favourite spots to practice yoga in Ubud:

1. Ubud Yoga Centre

Ubud Yoga Centre is a contemporary yoga studio with a river view situated at the southern part, just five minutes drive from the centre of Ubud. Started as a Bikram-inspired studio in Jakarta, Ubud Yoga Centre offers a wide selection of yoga disciplines that cater to all levels, ages, and fitness needs. The centre is best known for its hot yoga. From Bikram to Ashtanga, the hot yoga experience is a must. They also offer express hot yoga for people who are busy and always on the go. Express hot yoga is a 60-minute alternative class to the original Bikram hot yoga. Despite a shorter version, all the 26 postures will be executed, so you are not missing out! Their studios are well ventilated and fully equipped with hammocks for aerial yoga, heaters, barre, and Paiste gongs. Mats, towels, and showers are also available at the facility.

Ubud Yoga Centre welcomes families and people of all ages as well, there is children’s playroom, classes specifically for kids on the weekends, and a kids menu in our café! For those not interested in yoga or fitness, massages are offered as well as breathwork and sound healing classes for a relaxing experience!

Aside from yoga, Ubud Yoga Centre also caters to retreats, workshops, and Yoga Teacher Trainings.

Three-month unlimited pass is 4,500,000 IDR ($310). They also have a 5 Classes Package with a 30 days limit that costs 485,000 IDR ($33). You must register and pay before joining any classes.

2. The Yoga Barn

The Yoga Barn is a world-famous yoga and wellness center. With the total of 7 yoga studios – it is the largest yoga space in Ubud. The Yoga Barn is a tropical oasis, an epicenter of self-discovery, healing and renewal tucked into the heart of downtown Ubud. They hold over 130 classes and workshops a week on yoga, meditation, dance and healing – all levels are welcome!

The best thing about Yoga Barn is the mosaic of daily classes that are on offer. You can enjoy a wide variety of styles such as Vinyasa, Hatha, Kundalini and Yin, and try classes such as Intro to Yoga and Beginners Yoga if you’re just starting out on your yoga journey. The yoga studios are famously known for their tropical environment which cultivate an ‘in nature’ connection, an aspect and feeling that is celebrated and unique to the Yoga Barn experience.

3. Ubud Yoga House

Looking for something different? For a yoga experience with a view make sure to check Ubud Yoga House! Ubud Yoga House is a tranquil open-air studio just 15-minute walk from the heart of Ubud and is truly a hidden gem.

Ubud Yoga House was established on the 20th of March 2014, the International Day of Happiness. It was founded by Sheila Burch, an American with almost 20 years of yoga experience.

The studio offers daily yoga classes, meditation and sound healing as well as Yoga Teacher Training and retreats. There are two open air studios; one overlooks the rice terraces and the bamboo studio next to the river has both jungle and rice field views. The studio is accessible by motorbike, bicycle, or walking… but no car access. Surrounded by nature with amazing birds, butterflies, dragonflies and fireflies, it is an oasis of calm and peace. And with small group sizes, you can really benefit from personalised attention and feedback. After a class you are normally offered an ice towel and a fresh drink which is a really nice gesture.

The path along the rice terraces from this beautiful boutique studio lead to Sari Organic Restaurant where you can enjoy a wholesome and healthy meal before or after your yoga class.

It is also worth noting that Ubud Yoga House is a socially conscious business with a profit-sharing model that gives all teachers and full-time employees a share in the profits of the company.

4. Radiantly Alive

Radiantly Alive is a popular and centrally-located yoga studio in Ubud. It promotes the ultimate experience of the vibrancy of life through yoga and meditation. You can easily find the place as it’s just across from Bali Buddha Restaurant.

The rooms and facilities have a sleek and modern feel to them with a touch of local Balinese charm. If you like a strong dynamic practice – this is the place to be. They have a great variety of classes with a big focus on vinyasa. 

The entrance area is nice and chilled with some comfy sofas. Chandra café by Radiantly Alive is offering a good range of wholesome vegetarian and vegan foods and drinks. Smoothies and smoothie bowls are particularly good. The mandala chai is the best. Aside from yoga classes, Radiantly Alive also offer yoga teacher trainings, short trainings, workshops, and retreats.

All in all, there is something for all kind of yogis, beginners, intermediate or advanced. If you like a challenging vinyasa flow – make sure to try their RA vinyasa class.

5. Titi Batu

Not a studio, however a must-visit place for all your fitness needs and other fun things to do (yes, including yoga!)

Titi Batu is a health club that opened its doors in 2018 with the aim to build a local community of like-minded people. Titi Batu means stone bridge in English and according to the story – about 200 years ago there was a bridge connecting two villages at almost the exact spot of where Titi Batu is currently standing.

The list of facilities at Titi Batu is really impressive and includes a well-equipped gym, 2 swimming pools, a jacuzzi, a basketball court, a squash court, a skate park, sauna and steam room as well as two spacious yoga & fitness studios. There is an adult only pool, so you can savor a relaxing moment while the kids are busy in the playground.

Aside from many different classes like capoeira, circuit training, pilates, hatha yoga, karate for kids, they also host local events celebrating food, art, yoga, music and dance. So, if you are looking to run a yoga and fitness retreat with multiple fitness and activity options – make sure to check an adjoining venue Surya Kembar, as staying there would give that would give access to all of your participants.

Please note that all fitness and yoga classes must be prepaid in advance: a single class pass costs 130,000 IDR ($9) and 80,000 IDR for Indonesian KTP National. A 5-class package costs 500,000 IDR ($35) and 350,000 IDR for Indonesian KTP National, both valid for 3 months. A 10-class package that is valid for 6 months costs 900,000 IDR ($63) for regular classes and 600,000 IDR for Indonesian KTP National. 20-class package is valid for 9 months and costs 1,500,000 IDR ($104) and 1,000,000 IDR for Indonesian KTP National.
