As an organization that provides free online psychological support for people in Bali, Dr. Wiguna explained that the number of depression cases on the island has significantly surged since the Covid-19 pandemic struck in 2020. This also resulted in an increase in suicide cases.

Per data from the police department, there were 64 suicide cases in 2020 and the number was doubled to 125 in 2021,” Dr. Wiguna added.

The Helpline also received calls from seven foreign nationals who have been staying in Bali during the Covid-19 pandemic, asking for assistance for their depression and bipolar disorder.

Wiguna urged everyone to be more open to other people and never to hesitate to ask for help if necessary, especially when they are already feeling suicidal. “I hope everyone can be open to listening to other people and be more supportive and non-judgmental,” Dr. Wiguna concluded.
