As reported by Radar Bali, as Denpasar Bali awaits the formal announcement of stricter physical distancing rules and guidelines on public movement, a warning of “what’s to come” may be found in regulations just implemented at Denpasar’s popular markets. Reports state that the Kumbasari Market is temporarily closed with all local market activities to centered at the Pasar Badung. Traders are compelled to comply with strict physical distancing rules maintaining spatial rules between market traders.
The director of the Badung Market, IB Kompyang Wiranata, explained that the physical distancing rules are needed to prevent the spread of COVID-19. “The enforcement of physical distancing forms one part of the (new) municipal rules restricting public movement and activities (PKM),” he said. “Between each trader’s stand, there must be a separation of 1.5 meters”. Kompyang said the new rules were put in place starting on Thursday, 07 May 2020. Under guidelines from the municipal government of Denpasar, in addition to distances to be maintained between traders’ stands – all traders and visitors are also required to wear masks.
“Traders who do not wear masks will be verbally reprimanded. If they continue to be insubordinate, they will not be allowed to trade at the market. Visitors to the market who fail to wear a mask will be denied entry,” said Gus Kompyang. A number of handwashing stations are now in operation throughout the market. Kompyang said the establishment of a neat, clean, and well-maintained atmosphere at the Badung Market is in anticipation of the new Municipal Rules of Public Activities and Physical Distancing expected to be imminently announced.
An estimated 102 traders have been moved from Pasar Kumbasari to the Pasar Badung Complex. Because of the problems presented by absorbing an additional 102 traders who must also obey physical distancing rules, the Pasar Badung management will also utilize the parking area for produce and fruit traders. The basement parking area will continue to be used for vehicle parking.
