The OG of Bali’s Mexican scene is still the boldest spot in Seminyak for proper tacos, killer cocktails, and interiors that take you to 1960s Acapulco.
With its retro glow and iconic margaritas, Motel Mexicola has long been an OG Bali institution. But here’s what many don’t realise: Motel Mexicola is one of the best and most authentic Mexican restaurants in all of Bali.
Behind the explosive interiors and the famous fiestas is a kitchen that’s been slinging seriously good, traditional Mexican food for years. From hand-pressed masa tortillas to top-shelf mezcal, Motel Mexicola is a true Bali icon – not just for the cocktails, but for the food that started it all.
Twelve years strong and still spicing things up
Mexicola is essentially the beating heart of Seminyak. It opened way back in 2013 on Jalan Kayu Jati, and if you ask me, I’d say it single-handedly put this corner of Seminyak on the map. You can’t miss it either – it’s a bold, technicolour take on 1960s Acapulco. There are neon shrines, geometric tiles, vintage curios, and maximalist artwork. But while the interiors are unforgettable, it’s what’s on the plate that’s kept me coming back all these years…
For the love of Mexico
I remember the first time I ever visited Motel Mexicola – I overheard people at the bar raving about the authentic Mexican food they’d devoured a few hours earlier. I knew I’d missed the best part. So, I made it my mission to come back for the full dinner experience. And when I finally got a taste of Mexicola’s real magic? That’s when I truly understood what this place is all about.
The food here is the real unsung hero. The kitchen fires out street-style Mexican classics that are anything but basic. I’m talking proper corn tortillas, hand-pressed daily using imported Mexican masa. Every dish is loaded with punchy flavours, vibrant colours, and real soul that you only get from chefs who really care about where their food comes from.
Authentic Mexican flavours done right
Turn up early to Motel Mexicola and you’ll find an aesthetic Mexican restaurant with a chilled setting and seriously good food. It’s even open for lunch, a pre-sunset feed, and of course, a lively dinner.
I recommend ordering a table-full of plates to share, starting with the esquites (grilled corn) slathered in smokey chipotle mayo, and the fresh Aguachile Mixto: snapper, calamari, prawn and octopus. Then, it’s all about those masa tortillas. Try the Al Pastor Tacos, Tostada Pollo, and the oozy Quesadilla topped with Mexican chorizo.
This is the kind of food that brings people together. Bold, colourful small plates filling the table, hands diving in, and cocktails clinking in between bites. And yes, you’ll want to leave room for dessert – the churros are fried to golden perfection, best dunked in a silky dulce de leche.
Margaritas, mezcal and that Mexicola magic
As you’d expect, the drinks at Motel Mexicola are just as thoughtful. In fact, they’ve been whipped up by the man who literally puts the flair in flair bartending, Denny Bakiev. There are endless lists of top-shelf mezcals and tequilas here. Plus, a series of classic and tropical margaritas, all spiked with 100% blue agave tequila. And if you’re not into tequila, there’s plenty of signatures you can try too. I can’t get enough of the vodka-based La Bonita, or the Café Mexicola for a citrusy twist on an Espresso Martini.
Next stop: Uluwatu!
If you’ve made it this far, good news – you’re getting an exclusive scoop! Motel Mexicola is heading to Uluwatu in 2026, marking its third Bali outpost (after Seminyak and Canggu). This new coastal cantina will take its cue from Baja California, bringing with it fresh flavours, dramatic design, and even more space to feast and celebrate in true Mexicola style. You heard it here first…
