Bali’s New International Hospital In Sanur On Track For Completion By End Of 2023

Officials in Bali have confirmed that the new Sanur Special Economic Zone, which will become home to a world-class international hospital, is on track for completion by the end of 2023. Officials are clear that the new medical facilities will be operational in early 2024.

The new Sanur Special Economic Zone is set to become a significant contributor to the provincial economy. Officials in Bali and across Indonesia are hopeful that the new medical infrastructure in Sanur will become a model project for other regions in the country.

Speaking earlier this month, the Chair of the Sanur Special Economic Zone council and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Airlannga Hartarto, said that the project is well on course. He said, “The hope is, of course, that this is a model that can be replicated in other places. We know that the number of our leading hospitals and health centers is still relatively limited.”

The new hospital and accompanying facilities are situated on 41.26 hectares of land. The concept is to position Bali as a world-leading health tourism destination. The international hospital will be completed to international standards as outlined by the Mayo Clinic and feature the best wellness facilities available. The hospital will be equipped with 250 inpatient beds and dedicated specialist faculties, including cardiology, neurology, critical illness (ICU), gastroenterology, and orthopedics.

The hospital grounds merge with the famous Bali Beach Grand Inna Hotel, a new meeting and exhibition center, and a living pharmacy featuring an ethnomedical botanical garden to draw upon traditional Balinese medical practices as complementary therapy to the modern practices within the hospital. There will also be a commercial center for health, wellness, and medical-related medium, small, and micro-enterprises to support the local economy further.

Hartarto told reporters, “this is the development of the first health SEZ in Indonesia. We can see behind that there is a hotel renovation and the hospital ahead, which is also targeted to be [opened] next year. Of course, this will change the health industry in Indonesia, where now there are not so many super specialist health industries available”.

The Coordinating Minster for the Economy confirmed that the Sanur International Hospital would bring in consultants from the Mayo Clinic. He concluded, “of course, it is hoped that this can add to the completeness of the tourism industry in Bali, and if their health gets first class, then the confidence of tourists will be even higher.”

Speaking separately at the “Challenges and Opportunites of Indonesia’s Medical Tourism” panel, the Director of PT Permian Bina Medika Indonesia Healthcare Cooperations, Dr. Mira Dyah Wahyuni said international doctors and doctors from the Indonesian diaspora who graduated abroad would be brought into the hospital.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Governor of Bali, Tjokorda Oka Artha Arcana Sukawai, who is also the Chairman of the Sanur Development Foundation and representative of the Bali Tourism Board. He told the audience that the whole project is being designed in partnership with the Mayo Clinic, the best hospital in the US. The partnership is developing not only the hospital building itself but working to create the best governance, management, and workplace culture possible.

He told the panel, “the aim is to position quality, safety, and patient experience at the highest international standards. So it is hoped that Indonesians no longer need to go abroad for treatment [either].”

Both Dr. Wahyuni and the Deputy Governor agreed that currently, legislation made it hard for doctors and other medical professionals who trained outside of Indonesia to come to work in the country. Dr. Wahyuni confirmed that the recruitment process is underway for specialist doctors and that only the best candidates will be chosen. She said, “we don’t limit anyone who is in accordance with the competence [we require], we will definitely [employ them]/ Whether from Bali, from Sanur, from Klungkung and from anywhere [else] we will definitely accept.”
