The central government has decided to reduce the quarantine time for international visitors amid transmission of the Omicron variant in Indonesia.
The Maritime and Investment Ministry coordinator, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, confirmed that the central government has decided to reduce the quarantine time for Indonesian citizens who have just arrived from overseas and international tourists who plan to enter Bali.
Quarantine for Indonesian citizens was reduced from 14 days to 10 days, while the 10-day quarantine for international travelers was reduced to 7 days. The policy was initiated as the government believes that Covid-19 transmissions have been properly contained in recent months.
“The number of Covid-19 transmissions has significantly reduced. We also recorded zero deaths from Covid-19 on December 26th 2021 to January 2nd 2022,” Luhut said during a virtual press conference on Monday (3/1).
However, Luhut admitted that the transmission of the Omicron variant is currently surging in Indonesia. “152 cases of the Omicron variant have been recorded, and 23 percent of them have already recovered. This number is much better compared to other countries,” Luhut added.
Luhut claimed that Indonesia was more prepared for the Omicron variant than the Delta variant. This time around, all prevention protocols are strictly implemented, and the vaccine is being rapidly distributed.
He also explained that the 7-day quarantine applies to international visitors from all countries except the United Kingdom, Norway, Denmark, Namibia, Angola, Zambia, Malawi, Eswatini, Mozambique, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa, and two other countries that have yet to be announced.
