A Day of Compassion and Purpose: BackToBali Now Collaborates with Ragam Foundation

One morning in Kerobokan, our team walked into a kitchen unlike any other. We weren’t greeted by a gleaming stainless-steel space, but by the welcoming hum of volunteers, the aroma of simmering stews, and a palpable sense of warmth. This was Ragam Foundation’s heart in action—a community kitchen where kindness was the secret ingredient in every meal.

From Vision to Action

Founded in 2021, Ragam Foundation—whose name means “diversity” in Indonesian—brings together volunteers, community members, and local staff in an interconnected web of compassion. Its mission is simple yet powerful: build sustainable, long-term support systems rooted in empathy and practical impact.

Nicholas, the founder, draws inspiration from his childhood experiences across Indonesia—witnessing sharp contrasts in wealth and opportunities. His vision for Ragam emerged from the belief that “when we focus on what drives our souls, we attract those who feel the same”. Five guiding values— “santai, sabar, semangat, senyum, suksma” (relax, be patient, stay spirited, smile, and be thankful) shine through everything Ragam does.

Cooking with Purpose

The beating heart of Ragam’s work is the Bagi-Bagi Nasi Community Kitchen, established in 2021. Operating at least five days a week, the kitchen creates hundreds—even thousands—of nutritionally balanced meals, distributed across Bali in packaged form or via catered meals for orphanages and child centers.

Last year, Ragam prepared approximately 100,980 meals—a testament to both their impact and scalability. During our visit, we joined in chopping, cooking, and wrapping meals—every gesture carried intention and warmth.

Empowering Mothers in Suwung Kitchen

From Kerobokan, we made our way to their second kitchen near Suwung TPA, a collaboration with Bali Life Foundation. At the base of Bali’s largest trash mountain, the Suwung community—primarily families of trash pickers—was receiving care through Ragam’s consistent meal distribution.  A unique part of this program involves educating mothers to prepare proper, nutritious meals—not only for the children, but for their families, too.

These mothers bring both love and skills, baking nearly 100 cakes and cookies alongside daily meals. It’s not just about food; it’s about reclaiming pride, building confidence, and laying foundations for future independence.

Beyond Food: Building Systems, Not Just Meals

Ragam’s work extends into organic farming, where their garden in Kerobokan serves both as a source of fresh produce and a community learning space. Their other impactful programs include:

  • Water filter distribution, in partnership with Terra Water and Social Impakt, to bring clean drinking water to underserved communities.
  • Knitting workshops, teaching local women to craft teddy bears and other items—empowering them with skills and income, while providing comfort to children who receive these handmade tokens.
  • Broader initiatives that span education, economic empowerment, and environmental sustainability—anchored by a belief in circular, community-driven growth.

Join the Ripple of Kindness

Ragam’s kitchen in Kerobokan is open for volunteers Tuesday to Saturday from 8 AM to 12 PM, with meal distribution often continuing until early afternoon—there’s plenty of space and need for helping hands. Volunteers cook, package, and deliver meals across the island—so every slice of time spent here becomes a slice of hope for others.

Beyond food, Ragam welcomes all donations that come from the heart: ingredients, school supplies, kitchen tools, clothes—anything you feel moved to share goes directly to supporting communities in meaningful ways.

You’re warmly invited to learn more or get involved—visit their website ragamfoundation.org and connect via Instagram @ragamfoundation.

At Ragam Foundation, we learned that compassion isn’t grand—it’s grounded in kitchens, in hands that fold wrapping paper around meals, in mothers teaching each other how to bake, and in meals that do more than fill stomachs—they fuel hope.
